Introducing a Foraging Mat: Start Simple

Make the first session easy to understand.

Prepare the space

Choose a clear, level area and follow the mat’s setup instructions. Check the surface beneath it and make sure the mat is not damaged. Keep the activity separate from loose packaging and other items your dog should not investigate.

Make the first finds visible

For a mat intended for food searching, begin with a few easy-to-see pieces of food your dog normally eats. Account for that food in the day’s feeding routine. Do not assume every treat or every wet food is suitable for a particular fabric mat.

Keep the experience manageable

Watch how your dog responds. Let the design and your dog’s behavior guide the activity, following the manufacturer’s instructions. No mat carries a general promise to treat anxiety or change a medical or behavioral condition.

Finish with a reset

Remove leftover food, inspect the seams and fabric, and clean as directed. Put the mat away when the session ends if that is appropriate to its design. Supervision and care are part of using an enrichment item responsibly.
